Can I eat or drink before my ultrasound appointment?
(Abdomen): For abdomen ultrasounds, refrain from eating or drinking anything (except water for necessary medications) for 6 hours before your appointment. If it’s an afternoon appointment, you can have a light breakfast without dairy products.
A1 (Abdomen and Pelvis): No eating for 6 hours before the appointment, but finish drinking 3-4 cups (1 liter) of water 1 hour prior. For afternoon appointments, a light breakfast is allowed without dairy products.
What about pelvic ultrasounds or obstetrical exams?
(Pelvic, Obstetrical, Day 2-4 Follicular Monitoring): Maintain a full bladder by drinking 3-4 cups (1 liter) of water 1 hour before the appointment. Do not void before the test.
Is there any special preparation for male pelvic ultrasounds or uroflow studies?
(Male Pelvic, Uroflow Study): Arrive with a full bladder; finish drinking 3-4 cups (1 liter) of water 1 hour before your appointment. Do not void before the study.
What if I'm scheduled for an ultrasound with no specific preparation mentioned?
(No Preparation Required): Certain ultrasounds such as Echocardiogram, Vascular, Thyroid, Scrotum, Soft Tissue Lump, MSK, Breasts, and some Follicular Monitoring (other than day 2-4) require no specific preparation.
I am a diabetic. Are there additional instructions for me?
(Diabetics): Follow the general instructions based on the type of ultrasound. Additionally, if you are on insulin or oral medication, have a light breakfast without dairy products and take your usual dose.

What is involved in a General Ultrasound for Abdomen and Pelvis?
